German insurtech Feather has launched a new commercial insurance product for international companies with expatriates in Europe. The digital-first service expands the startup’s coverage from individual protection to cross-border employees.
Feather, which initially gained traction by offering digital insurance services to expatriates in Germany, France and Spain, is now targeting HR departments with a platform that covers employee health, life and pension insurance. The platform also includes professional liability, general liability and cyber insurance.
“Businesses in Europe, especially small and medium-sized businesses, often struggle to offer generous insurance benefits. Their traditional insurance partners are unable to support them, especially when it comes to pension insurance, where international employees often lose thousands of euros by being locked into high-fee products,” said Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather.
Feather’s business model aims to address inefficiencies in the European commercial insurance market. The company is positioning its services as particularly valuable for companies where expatriates make up at least 10% of their workforce.
“Feather is a smart move for companies where expatriates make up at least 10% of their workforce,” Schumacher added. “HR leaders can turn onboarding international employees into a warm welcome rather than a bureaucratic nightmare.”
Leading the expansion is Nicolai Schieffer (pictured), Feather’s head of B2B business, who is responsible for building relationships with HR teams and expanding the company’s presence among European employers. “Feather’s expansion is designed to address relocation pain points upstream — at the employer level, where most insurance decisions are initiated,” he said.
In addition to employee insurance, the new coverages include cyber insurance, a growing concern for companies affected by the EU’s latest NIS-2 directive.
The launch follows Feather’s $6 million funding round in 2024 and the appointment of new leadership in France and Spain to accelerate regional operations. The Berlin-based company is continuing to expand its footprint in Europe.
