Following a directive issued by the Nigeria Police Force on February 1, 2025, requiring all vehicle owners to hold valid third-party motor insurance, key players in the Nigerian insurance sector have united to launch a nationwide public education campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of compliance and its benefits for society at large.
Collaboration Among Industry Leaders
The initiative is a joint effort by the Nigeria Insurance Association (NIA), Nigeria Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), and the Loss Adjusters Association of Nigeria (ILAN). Its goals include promoting road safety, ensuring adherence to traffic laws, and protecting drivers from the financial risks associated with third-party property damage, vehicle loss, or personal injury caused by accidents.
Campaign Highlights and Outreach Strategies
At a press conference in Lagos, Mrs. Ebelechukwu B. Nwachukwu, Chairperson of the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Sub-Committee of the Insurance Commission and Managing Director of Rex Insurance Limited, emphasized the critical role of the campaign.
She stated, “Many drivers are still unaware that third-party motor insurance is not only a legal requirement but also a crucial protection for the lives and property of all road users.”
The campaign will employ a multi-channel approach, including radio advertisements broadcast in English, Pidgin, Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. Print ads and billboards will feature prominently in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Social media platforms will also play a major role in spreading the message.
Mrs. Nwachukwu added, “Complying with this law is not just about avoiding fines. It’s about protecting yourself and others every time you drive. Additionally, third-party insurance covers you when traveling across West Africa, which is a valuable benefit many drivers may not know.”
Addressing the Challenge of Uninsured Vehicles
Mr. Moruf Apampa, Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee and Managing Director of NSA Insurance, highlighted the ongoing issue of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads.
“There are still many vehicles without proper insurance,” Apampa explained. “When accidents happen, innocent people and public services often bear the losses. This campaign aims to educate people on why insurance matters and to make coverage more accessible.”
Facilitating Easy Compliance
To support vehicle owners in meeting the new requirements, Nigerians can now apply for or renew their third-party motor insurance via the Nigeria Insurance Industry Portal (NIIP) or by visiting any licensed insurance company nationwide. The NIIP platform also offers real-time policy verification through the ASKNIIP portal, where users can enter vehicle registration details.
Call for Industry and Media Support
The subcommittee urged media organizations and industry groups such as CAMCONIA, led by Mr. Segun Bankol, to back the campaign efforts. Their support is vital for reshaping public attitudes towards insurance in Nigeria.
Other subcommittee members present at the briefing included Mr. Ademola Abidogun, Managing Director of Guinea Insurance Corporation, and Ms. Abimbola Onakomaia, President of the Professional Insurance Ladies Association (PILA). Both stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to foster industry growth and build public trust.
